For Children
A frequently asked question is at what age a child should be examined by an orthodontic specialist. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends all children receive this check-up at no later than age 7. Early orthodontic treatment may be recommended to favorably guide the child's facial growth, correct harmful oral habits, guide permanent teeth into favorable alignment, reduce the risk of trauma to protruding teeth and enhance the child's appearance. Often, two-phase treatment approaches are recommended. An early treatment phase can reduce the severity of the orthodontic problem and shorten the duration of treatment in a later phase of full braces, as well as greatly lessen the need for removal of permanent teeth. An early evaluation allows the orthodontist more treatment options to present to parents of growing children.
