One out of five orthodontic patients is an adult. The biology of tooth movement between children and adults is very similar. Although tooth movement is a little slower in adults, most adults are very compliant and their overall treatment time closely equals that of children. Since adults have completed their facial growth, severe imbalances between the jaws may not be correctable without various types of jaw surgeries. Such treatment approaches constitute a small percentage of adult orthodontic care. Most orthodontic treatment is accomplished without the removal of permanent teeth. New technologic improvements in arch wires and self-ligating braces have allowed for more gentle and efficient forces during tooth movements and have greatly contributed to patient comfort. Adult patients have the opportunity to enhance their appearance with braces by choosing clear ceramic braces or Invisalign® clear aligners. |
